The largest
and grandest house of the first Elizabethan age, this
has been the home of the Cecil family for more than
400 years.
In the movie Burghley was used for the exterior
and interior of Rosings, the imposing
home of Lady Catherine de Bourg, daunting dowager
aunt of Darcy, and patron of Mr Collins.
Built by Sir William Cecil, Chancellor and favourite of Queen Elizabeth
1st, Burghley House is now owned by a family trust and the property
is managed by Lady Victoria Leatham.
Many of the Cecil descendents traveled extensively, acquiring major
works of art and employing artists and craftsmen from Europe to
enhance their surroundings. The magnificent Heaven Room is an example
and was used in the film as Lady Catherine’s drawing room.
On approaching Burghley House for the first time in the film, Mr
Collins turns to Lizzie to ask “One of the most extraordinary
sights in all Europe is it not?” You will just have to make
up your own mind!
